Braem Horse Racing is
managed by Leo. Leo was born on July the 17th
1958 and he was raised at the farm of his parents in Waasmunster
where he lived till the end of 1999. As a child he was already
obsessed by horses. After many years as a
jockey in pony races all over the country he joined Bob Waterloos,
one of Belgium most famous trainers those days. The master learned
him how to ride and train racehorses. In the meantime Leo bred race
ponies with the leading Sire BLUE BANGLE (IRE) who’s progeny
established themselves as the most successful in Belgium ever, with
his junior brother Peter as talented jockey on their back.
Peter is
now a professional globetrotting jockey who raced in in
Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, New Zeeland, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore.
During
his service in the mounted Police Force, Leo, privately, started to train a few
racehorses and he saddled his first ever winner in 1990
(Becky Peepsight). The train started to roll as some owners gave him
the chance to train their horses. His son Glen was born in 1985 and nowadays he is a
successful jockey. He finished his apprenticeship in 2006 also being
champion rider in Belgium the same year. Since 2000 Leo is based in Itegem in the Flanders Kempen, (province of Antwerpen).
Over the years Leo bought many winners from friends in
Germany as there are Christian Freiherr von der Recke and Bruce
Hellier. A lot of horses has been imported from the UK, Ireland,
Germany and France . He landed his first winner abroad for in Germany in 1996
with Cemaes Bay (GB) followed by a win in France with Dissidentia
(IRE). BHR have been champion trainers in Belgium in 2002, 2003,
2006 and 2007. They sadly failed a Listed win in Germany after Tirol
Storm (IRE) was beaten by a nose in Köln but finished the race with
a broken sesamoidbone. He is still spoiled and owned by his loyal
groom Ellemieke. But later Au Vol de Sol (FR) won the German Derby
for Arabian racehorses (Gr III).
Leo achieved all these
successes thanks to family, friends, owners, staff, etc. and most of
all to his mother Sulma who worked for many years in the stables
with an endless energy.
